EU Mechanism interfacing science and policy on biodiversity and ecosystem services

May 2012

The need to reinforce the science policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystems governance in Europe is explicitly highlighted in the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 which stresses that "The EU will remain closely involved in and contribute actively to the new intergovernmental science-policy platform on Biodiversity and ecosystem services (IPBES), particularly to work on regional assessments, for which an EU-level mechanism may be required to reinforce the science-policy interface."

With the IPBES recently created at international level, the discussions at EU level on whether and how to establish a EU mechanism interfacing science and policy on biodiversity and ecosystem services are intensifying. These discussions are particularly relevant to the current work by Member States and the EC on mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services, as provided for in the EU Biodiversity Strategy, Target 2, Action 5. SPIRAL and its partner project BiodiversityKnowledge are actively contributing to these discussions.
